Speed to Market

Stories often come to life for the first time through a storyboard. My friend and I both have a passion for filmmaking so we decided to build an AI powered storyboard platform. Our goal was to prioritize speed over perfection and get an MVP out within two weeks. Best case scenario, we build something users mostly like and fix issues based on user feedback. Worst case, we lose 2 weeks of our time but learn some new things and have fun building something from scratch.

THE INDUSTRY

Seeing what's out there…

Most companies are private (no financials)

  • $115M US market (2021)

  • Traditional storyboarding is time consuming

  • Users want the ability to collaborate virtually

  • Digital storytelling is on the rise

  • Subscriptions range from $15-$99/mo

COMPETITIVE ANALYSIS

Who can we learn from?

With our priority being speed, we elected to lean heavily on industry standards, competitor offerings, online user feedback, and our intuition. Our plan was to recruit beta testers and test with them after we took the MVP live.

BRAND DESIGN

System: Colors, styles, typescales, and a logo.

We set aside a single day to build mood boards, extract inspiration, and design the very beginnings of the brand. Mind you, this was all done as a side project in our free time.

THE CHALLENGE

Incorporating the AI

There’s a lot of hype around AI but it’s not as easy as clicking a button and getting the image you want. Models such as Midjourney and Stable Diffusion take a decent amount of learning before you start getting precise images. Simplifying the interaction between user and AI was key. If we couldn't solve this, our solution wouldn't be any more efficient than the traditional storyboarding process.

OUR SOLUTIOIN

What we came up with

Our solution was turning complex AI commands such as Midjourney's aspect ratio command "- - ar_ _" , into visual UI components. The layout is based on existing professional software such as Black Magic’s DaVinci Resolve and the popular Adobe editing software.

The UI would act as a sort of "translator" to eliminate the need for users to memorize AI commands in prompts.

OUTCOME

A functional AI storyboard SaaS

After 2 weeks we had a working MVP that was ready for beta testers. While it was far from perfect we accomplished our goal within our given time frame.
